Welcome to our webpage, skolungdom.fi, the home of FSS, the Swedish-speaking School Student Union of Finland!

Introduction

The Swedish-speaking School Student Union of Finland (Finlands Svenska Skolungdomsförbund) is a national school student union in Finland that promotes school student rights, participation and activism.

Activities
FSS functions as an advocacy and lobbying group, fighting for the voice of the students to be heard in matters concerning education and schools, as well as all other relevant social issues in society.

Ideology
FSS is run by students, for students. Our ideological cornerstone is the thought that because students are the ones who spend their time in the schools, the students are the experts on education, and should be treated as such. FSS is a non-governmental, non-profit organization, free from any ties to political parties or religious institutions.

History
FSS was founded on January 4, 1921, and is the oldest school student union in the world. This rich history gives us both the experience to know what we are doing, but also a firm foundation to rely on, for progressive and radical ideas on education to emerge.

Members and organization
We have about 5000 personal members from upper comprehensive (grundskolans övre klasser), general upper-secondary (gymnasium) and vocational upper-secondary school (yrkesläroanstalt) as well as from the free-education of folk high schools (folkhögskola).  (A good insight in to the Finnish educational system can be found on OBESSU's Education CountryFile for Finland)
Although we are a national organization, our members are mostly found where the Swedish-speaking schools are located and where a majority of the Swedish-speaking Finns live: the southwest coast of Finland.
Our main sources of funding are the Ministry of Education and Svenska Kulturfonden in addition to other smaller funds.

National co-operation

FSS is one of the four organizations in Finland working for the rights of students in upper-secondary school, and we work closely together to reach common goals concerning the educational policies of Finland. We also have good relations to the organizations working in the field of tertiary education, and to other NGO’s working with issues concerning youth in Finland.
FSS is a member of  Youth Co-Operation – Allianssi, the national umbrella organization for Finnish youth organizations.

International
FSS is strongely devoted to international co-operation between school students. FSS is a member of OBESSU, the Organising Bureau of European School Student Unions and actively contributes to the work for school student rights on a European level. We also have good connections to the national school student unions of our neighboring countries, especially to the other Nordic countries, where students face many similar problems and share a similar educational history.

Are you or you organization interested in working together with FSS? Or perhaps you would like to consult us in matters of education? Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, what so ever.
